What Boeing does and how it makes money
Boeing reports three segments (Boeing Q3 2026 release). Shares of revenue below are FintechZoom calculations for Q3 2026.
- Commercial Airplanes (BCA): the 737, 767, 777 and 787 jets, with the 777X in certification. Revenue is mostly booked when a jet is delivered, so monthly deliveries drive the segment. Q3 2026 revenue was $10.7 billion, 44% of the total.
- Defense, Space and Security (BDS): military aircraft, weapons, satellites and space programs. Q3 2026 revenue was $7.9 billion, 33% of the total. In the quarter the US Navy selected Boeing for the F/A-XX next-generation fighter, and BDS won a seven-year contract to expand PAC-3 Seeker production.
- Global Services (BGS): parts, maintenance, modifications and training for airlines and governments. Q3 2026 revenue was $5.6 billion, 23% of the total, at an 18.3% operating margin, the highest of the three. It won a US Army award to maintain the AH-64 Apache fleet.
Boeing completed its purchase of Spirit AeroSystems, its main 737 fuselage supplier, in December 2025 (Boeing Q4 2025 release). The former Spirit plant in Wichita, Kansas, is part of the 737 production ramp described below. In 2025 Boeing also sold its Digital Aviation Solutions unit, booking a $9.6 billion gain in the fourth quarter, which is why 2025 GAAP earnings were positive at $2.48 a share.

Boeing earnings: third quarter 2026 results
Boeing reported on October 27, 2026. All figures below come from the company release and the matching SEC 8-K exhibit.

| Net loss | -$116 million | -$5.34 billion | -$551 million |
| GAAP diluted EPS | -$0.26 | -$7.14 | -$1.04 |
| Core EPS (non-GAAP) | -$0.34 | -$7.47 | -$1.30 |
| Operating cash flow | $1.50 billion | $1.12 billion | $2.68 billion |
| Free cash flow (non-GAAP) | $464 million | $238 million | -$359 million |
| Commercial deliveries | 161 | 160 | 475 |
| Total backlog (Sept 30) | $745.4 billion, a record | Not given | Up from $682.2 billion on Dec 31, 2025 |
Against expectations: analysts polled by LSEG expected a core loss of $0.21 a share (Reuters), and the consensus tracked by MarketBeat was a loss of $0.25 on revenue of $23.95 billion. Revenue came in above both; the loss was wider.
The Q3 2025 comparison includes a large 777X charge. Reach-forward losses on the 777X and 767 programs were $5.14 billion in the first nine months of 2025 and $86 million in the same period of 2026. Q3 2026 operating cash flow absorbed about $0.7 billion of Department of Justice settlement payments, and the defense margin included a $252 million gain on the sale of HRL Laboratories. Boeing gave no financial guidance in the release; on the call it said it still expects about $2 billion of free cash flow for 2026 (Reuters).

Segment revenue and operating margin for Q3 2026 against Q3 2025, with backlog at September 30, 2026, from the Boeing release.
| Segment | Q3 2026 revenue | Change y/y | Q3 2026 margin | Q3 2025 margin | Backlog |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Commercial Airplanes | $10.72 billion | -3% | -6.5% | -48.3% | $611.8 billion, over 6,300 jets |
| Defense, Space and Security | $7.94 billion | +15% | 6.2% | 1.7% | $100.5 billion |
| Global Services | $5.57 billion | +4% | 18.3% | 17.5% | $32.7 billion |
| Total | $24.19 billion | +4% | 1.5% (GAAP operating) | -20.5% | $745.4 billion |
Commercial Airplanes lost $697 million in the quarter (Reuters). Boeing said its margin reflected a less favorable delivery mix, higher projected costs tied to future production rate changes and higher supply chain cost estimates. 777 deliveries fell to 5 from 9 a year earlier and 787 deliveries to 22 from 24. The segment booked 300 net orders, including from Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines and Lufthansa.
Defense backlog reached a record $101 billion, 23% of it from non-US customers. The F/A-XX award is not in backlog yet; Boeing will add it after the source selection review is complete.

The FAA capped 737 output at 38 a month after the January 2024 door-plug blowout and allowed 42 a month in October 2025. Boeing then cleared an FAA “capstone review” for the step to 47, which CEO Kelly Ortberg announced in late May 2026; he said Boeing raises output in steps of five, about six months apart (The Seattle Times via Aviation Pros). The FAA certified the 737-7 in the third quarter and the 737-10 in October 2026.
What slowed the ramp: wing production has not delivered the expected efficiency gains, the new 737 North Line in Everett (first jet rolled out on October 27) has to reach about five a month, and fuselage output at the former Spirit plant in Wichita is being held below final assembly while Boeing uses up inventory (AirData News). As of October 27, Boeing expects to deliver fewer than 500 737s in 2026. Ortberg told analysts, “We’re not stable at 47 yet.”
For the 777X, Reuters reported that Boeing expects 777-9 certification by mid-2027 and 10 to 15 deliveries that year. A supplier dispute that stalled wing production for 777 freighters and 767s, including the KC-46 tanker, has been resolved, but CFO Jay Malave said the effect will show “over the next few quarters” (Reuters).

Why Boeing stock fell after the Q3 report
The quarter itself was mixed: revenue beat forecasts and free cash flow was positive, but the core loss was wider than expected. The bigger issue for investors was the 737 timetable. In May, executives said the 47-a-month rate would come in summer 2026; on October 27 they moved it to early 2027 and said Boeing would miss its 2026 737 production and delivery targets (Reuters).
Cash flow expectations moved out with it. Boeing guided to about $3 billion of free cash flow in 2027, against a Wall Street consensus of about $5.5 billion according to Jefferies analyst Sheila Kahyaoglu, and pushed its $10 billion free cash flow target to 2029, a year later than investors had expected (Reuters). Tony Bancroft of Gabelli Funds told Reuters, “The market is going to punish any delay in increasing cash flow,” while adding that the long-term picture remains good with Airbus as the only major competitor (Reuters via Devdiscourse).
The stock closed at $168.18 that day, its worst session in more than 18 months according to AP (via KIRO 7), then touched an intraday low of $165.01 on October 28 before recovering to $173.31 by November 3 (Yahoo Finance).
Boeing vs Airbus: deliveries, orders and backlog
Airbus delivered 547 commercial aircraft in the first nine months of 2026, up from 507 a year earlier, and kept its 2026 target of about 870 deliveries. Boeing delivered 475, up from 440 (Airbus 9M 2026 results; Boeing Q3 release).
The gap is widest in single-aisle jets: Airbus delivered 428 A320 Family aircraft in the nine months against 367 Boeing 737s. Airbus plans 70 to 75 A320 Family jets a month by the end of 2027; Boeing plans 52 737s a month in the second half of 2027.

Outside commercial jets the comparison turns: Boeing’s defense and services segments produced $13.5 billion of revenue in Q3 2026 alone, while Airbus revenue outside its commercial aircraft business was about EUR 13.9 billion for the whole nine months (FintechZoom calculations from the two releases). Boeing stock valuation
Boeing has lost money on a core basis in 2026, so price-to-earnings ratios say little. GAAP earnings over the last four quarters are positive only because of the $9.6 billion gain on the 2025 Digital Aviation Solutions sale (Boeing Q4 2025 release). Sales and cash flow give a better read. All figures below are FintechZoom calculations at the $173.31 close on November 3, 2026.
| Measure | Figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Market value | About $137.4 billion | 792.7 million weighted diluted shares |
| Net debt | $25.2 billion | $45.9 billion debt minus $20.7 billion cash and securities, Sept 30, 2026 |
| Enterprise value | About $162.6 billion | Market value plus net debt |
| Revenue, last four quarters | $94.9 billion | Q4 2025 plus first nine months of 2026 |
| Price to sales | 1.45x | Market value divided by four-quarter revenue |
| EV to sales | 1.71x | Enterprise value divided by four-quarter revenue |
| Free cash flow, last four quarters | About $16 million | $375 million (Q4 2025) minus $359 million (nine months 2026) |
| Market value to 2026 free cash flow outlook | About 69x | Boeing outlook of about $2 billion |
| Market value to 2027 free cash flow outlook | About 46x | Boeing outlook of about $3 billion |
| Market value to $10 billion free cash flow target | About 14x | Target year moved to 2029 |
The last line is the one investors watch most. At the November 3 price, buyers are paying about 14 times the free cash flow Boeing hopes to reach in 2029, and much more on nearer years. That is why the delay of the $10 billion target by one year moved the stock as much as it did.
What analysts said after the Q3 report
On October 28, 2026, TD Cowen cut its price target to $210 from $240 and kept a Buy rating, and Piper Sandler downgraded the stock to Neutral from Overweight (MarketBeat). Earlier, Citigroup moved to Sell from Buy and Cantor Fitzgerald to Neutral, both on August 11, 2026. MarketBeat’s tally on November 3 showed 1 Strong Buy, 21 Buy, 8 Hold and 3 Sell ratings with an average 12-month target of $247.88, a figure that may not include every post-results cut.
Jefferies’ Sheila Kahyaoglu said Boeing’s 2027 free cash flow outlook of about $3 billion was below the $5.5 billion consensus, citing fewer deliveries and higher capital spending (Reuters). Analyst targets are opinions and change often; FintechZoom does not issue price targets.
Boeing debt, cash and the dividend
Boeing ended September 2026 with $20.7 billion of cash and marketable securities and $45.9 billion of consolidated debt, unchanged from June, plus $10.0 billion of undrawn credit facilities (Boeing Q3 release). Net debt was $25.2 billion, down from $30.4 billion a year earlier (Reuters). Boeing repaid $8.4 billion of debt in the first nine months of 2026, and Q3 interest and debt expense fell to $573 million from $694 million (8-K exhibit).
Boeing suspended its common dividend on March 20, 2020 (Boeing) and has not paid one since. The Q3 2026 release lists only dividends on its mandatory convertible preferred stock, $87 million in the quarter. Boeing has not set a date for restoring the common dividend.

Risks to Boeing stock
- Production: the 737 plan depends on wing output, the new Everett line and Wichita fuselages all keeping pace. Another slip would push out the $3 billion 2027 and $10 billion 2029 cash flow figures.
- Regulation and quality: each 737 rate step has needed FAA sign-off since the January 2024 blowout, and the 777-9 still needs certification.
- Suppliers: the dispute that stalled 777 freighter and 767 wings shows how one supplier can hold up deliveries for several quarters.
- Debt: $45.9 billion of debt and $573 million of quarterly interest expense leave less room if cash flow disappoints.
- Labor: engineers and technicians in SPEEA ratified a four-year contract on October 1, 2026 after rejecting an earlier offer in August, which lowers the near-term strike risk for that union (KIRO 7). Wage costs rise under the deal, with a 10% raise up front.
- Tariffs and trade: Boeing lists tariffs among the risks in the forward-looking statements of its Q3 2026 release.
- Rates: the Fed held at 3.75% to 4.00% on October 28 with two votes for a hike (Federal Reserve), and futures priced a 79% chance of a December hike on November 3 (Reuters via Kitco). Higher rates raise airline financing costs and Boeing’s own refinancing costs.
Boeing stock scenarios
These are FintechZoom scenarios, not price predictions or advice. Each multiplies an assumed 2028 free cash flow by 18 to 22 times and divides by 792.7 million shares, ignoring dilution from the mandatory convertible preferred stock. Boeing has given figures for 2026 (about $2 billion), 2027 (about $3 billion) and a $10 billion target for 2029, but not for 2028; the 2028 inputs are our assumptions.
| Scenario | Assumptions | 2028 free cash flow assumed | Implied share price | What would invalidate it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bull | 737 stable at 47 in Q1 2027 and at 52 in the second half of 2027; 777-9 certified by mid-2027; Boeing reaches the $10 billion cash flow level a year ahead of its own target | $10 billion | $227 to $278 | Rate 47 not stable by mid-2027, or 2027 free cash flow below $3 billion |
| Base | Boeing hits its own path: about $3 billion in 2027 and $10 billion in 2029, with 2028 about halfway | $6.5 billion | $148 to $180 | A 2027 outlook in January 2027 well above or below $3 billion |
| Bear | Rate 47 slips to late 2027, 777-9 certification moves into 2028, or a supplier or labor stoppage cuts deliveries | $4 billion | $91 to $111 | Monthly 737 deliveries holding at 47 or more through the first half of 2027 |
The $173.31 close on November 3, 2026 sits inside the base range, which is consistent with investors pricing roughly the path Boeing laid out on October 27.

From our desk: what we found checking this update
The previous edition of this page, last changed on September 22, 2026, had no dated prices or sources. It said Boeing opened 2024 near $220 and recovered above $200 by year-end; Yahoo Finance closing data show $260.66 at the end of 2023 and $177.00 at the end of 2024, with a low close of $138.14 on November 14, 2024. It gave a 52-week range of $155 to $230, against $165.01 to $254.35 when we checked, described the backlog as more than 4,000 aircraft (Boeing reports over 6,300), placed the Q3 2026 report in mid-October (it came on October 27), and gave position-size advice we removed.
Two of its three charts did not match the facts. One, labelled as illustrative data, showed Boeing delivering 550 jets in 2025; Boeing reported 600. Another drew bull, base and bear price paths for 2026 with no stated assumptions. We replaced them with a sourced delivery chart, a balance sheet panel and a sector ETF chart, and set the TradingView widgets, which had fixed widths of up to 1,270 pixels, to fit phone screens.
While checking the October 27 move, we found three closing figures: Yahoo Finance history shows $168.18, AP (via KIRO 7) reported $168.07, and Reuters reported $170.23 during the afternoon. We use the Yahoo Finance close. Pre-report forecasts also differed: LSEG had a core loss of $0.21 a share, MarketBeat $0.25.
